Update
GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Exactly a month from today, on 23 March, Nomphelo Maloyi (36), an employee of Dr Beyers Naude Municipality, and Lwazi Kay (35), will appear in the Graaff-Reinet Magistrate's Court for the alleged 'insurance money murder' of Nomphelo Maloyi's relative, 66-year old Mynhardt Maloyi.
Maloyi's body was found inside his house in Henry Street in Graaff-Reinet with multiple stab wounds to his upper body in November last year.
What makes this murder charge even more shocking than usual, is that the murder is alleged to have been motivated by pure greed and that more people may be involved in this alleged money-grabbing scam.
The state claims that Nomphelo Maloyi asked Kay to kill her elderly family member just to get her hands on an insurance policy payout.
According to Maloyi's two Facebook profiles, she attended Nqweba Secondary School in Graaff-Reinet and on the one profile she describes herself as a "sweet, loving and very humble person" and on the other as "loving, caring and most funny person, lyks (sic) to laugh and being hapi (sic)".
Maloyi and Kay first appeared in court on Monday 12 December. Both were denied bail and remain in custody.
According to Warrant Officer Nkohli Majola, spokesperson for SAPS in the Sarah Baartman District, the court has since added six charges ranging from murder to insurance fraud to the initial murder charge.
Murderous pastor
In a similar case, beautiful 25-year-old Hlompho Mohapi from George was murdered in 2018 after fraudulent life and funeral policies to the value of R3-million had been taken out on her life by strangers from the Eastern Cape.
She was lured to a so-called job interview but never returned home. Her body was found near Herold's Bay by a passing fisherman with seven stab wounds to her chest. The young woman's throat had also been slit.
Two of Mohapi's murderers, both from the Eastern Cape - a pastor, Melisizwe Monqo and his cousin Phumlani Quesheka - were subsequently sent to prison for life, while Monqo's wife, Siphosihle Pamba, is serving 20 years in jail.
At the time the pastor was described as the mastermind behind the offences, and during the trial never showed any remorse.
The trio allegedly also attempted to kill three other women in the Eastern Cape using a similar modus operandi between 2017 and 2018.
A total of R26,9-million worth of life insurance and funeral policies had been taken out from various companies on the lives of the four intended victims without their knowledge.
Beautiful Hlompho Mohapi was brutally murdered in 2018 by an Eastern Cape pastor for a life insurance policy pay-out.
