GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality has informed the People for Basic Rights (B4BR) that they will respond to their memorandum of complaints no later than 28 February.
The memorandum was handed to Speaker Cheslin Felix after the peaceful march by residents and civic organisations in Graaff-Reinet on 8 February.
The municipality did not make yesterday’s deadline to respond, but instead sent a letter to the P4BR, a member of the Camdeboo Community Development Forum, saying that the municipality is “following internal processes to prepare for the response to the memorandum” and that “response will therefore be provided on or before Tuesday, 28 February 2023”.
In the letter Felix states that the consideration of the P4BR memorandum “came at an opportune time for the municipality” as they received a visit from the Provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (EC CoGTA) on 16 February with the purpose of reviewing their petitions policy.
Felix says that the municipality are of the opinion that “the support of EC CoGTA will assist them greatly in the management of petitions and improvement of their relationship with organs of civil society”.
