GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Graaff-Reinet residents have recently complained of discoloured water coming out of their taps.
The Graaff -Reinet Advertiser alerted Leolynn Smith, communications officer of the local municipality, of the complaints earlier this week, which she promised to follow up on.
On Wednesday afternoon, November 29, she responded as follows, “The Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality is facing a water crisis”.
According to Smith, “the discolouration of the water is attributed to the low level of the Nqweba Dam - which now stands at 11%.
This has forced the municipality to start supplying Graaff -Reinet and surrounds with borehole water.
Consumers are wary of consuming tap water but Smith assures the Graaff -Reinet public that the water is still safe to drink.
Because the dam level has reached critical levels, the Municipality is now forced to impose very strict water restrictions.
The Municipality is calling on consumers to adhere to these restrictions which prohibits:
1. The use of water obtained from the municipality’s water supply system for:
• The watering of gardens, lawns, grassed areas, flowerbeds, sports fields, bowling greens and the like;
• Topping up of filling fountains, ornamental ponds, and the like;
• Filling of swimming and paddling pools
• Washing of paved areas, walls, roofs, buildings and similar structures.
2. The use or operation of hosepipes, sprinklers, automatic swimming pool fillers, automatic urinal flushing systems and the connection of a hosepipe or any form of irrigation system to a tap supplying water from the municipality’s water supply system.
