NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS — Ten delighted children from the Lettie de Klerk school in Nieu-Bethesda were recently identified as suitable to receive bright yellow, robust, Qhubeka bicycles.
Those children living outside of Pienaarsig who have to walk 2-5 km to school were donated the bicycles on the premise that they look after them well and ensure that they attend school whenever possible.
The philosophy behind MTN Qhubeka is that ‘people move forward with bicycles. People earn bicycles through our programmes, improving access to schools, clinics and jobs. Qhubeka is a Nguni word that means “to progress” or to move forward”.
The 10 youngsters who have received the bicycles certainly seem to be making the most of them. When it snowed two weekends ago, a lad from Kooikamp was seen lifting his brother through the snowstorm.
The long walk to school for youngsters living on de Toren farm a way out of the village is much more manageable now that they have bikes. Qhubeka bikes have certainly given these children a new lease on life and made their transportation to school that much easier.
