GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Precisely 452 days and 63 Saturdays after the last parkrun on 14 March 2020, park runners were able to participate in the Mountain Drive parkrun again on Saturday 29 May.
A total number of 71 park runners, including 20 registered first timers, participated in this long-awaited parkrun. Lwazi Jonga, finished with the best time of 25:11 while and Jarrod Gerber, Zoe Hobson, Hester le Roux and Anje Deysel all attained personal bests.
The 5km Mountain Drive parkrun is a fun event, organized and managed by volunteers, that takes place every Saturday. Starting times are 07:00 from October to March and 08:00 from April to September. Participation is free of charge and everyone is welcome.
Park runners are encouraged to register on the website but registration is not mandatory. However, a strict "no printed barcode - no result" policy applies. Those who are not registered will still be able to participate but will not receive a running-time result.
Kim Spencer Primic, the run director of the Mountain Drive parkrun, says she would like to see many more people participating in the parkrun and extends an open invitation to anyone who would like to join in on the fun.
The Mountain Drive parkrun on Saturday was the 60th parkrun since its inception and it was made possible by Shirley Spencer, Tammy de Vos, Marchant van Rooyen, Anneke Wieneke, Kim Spencer Primic, Peter Burdett and Johan Duvenhage, who volunteered their time to organize and manage the event.
Twenty-nine parkrun events across South Africa returned on 29 May. South Africa is the seventh country to welcome back these weekly community events after the Covid-19 lockdown.
According to Tom Williams, Chief Operating Officer of the parkrun events, there were 663 events around the world during this weekend, with more than 57 000 park runners, including more than 2 700 first-timers, participating in these events.
