GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — It was another eventless week on the Graaff-Reinet crime front for the reporting week of November 13 to 20 reports police spokesperson W/O Gerrie van Rooyen.
Burglaries are on the increase with break inns reported at business premises at the local SPCA, Lewis Stores, a church in East Street Kroonvale, as well as the Outsiders premises in Nieu-Bethesda.
Burglaries at residential premises were reported at East Street and Jasmyn Street in Kroonvale, Royal Block in Umasizakhe and Bree Street in Santaville.
Two incidents of stock theft were reported on November 17 on the farm Doornberg near Nieu-Bethesda as well as at Krieglerskraal near Graaff-Reinet.
W/O van Rooyen warns that stock theft is expected to increase in the run-up to the festive season.
On November 6 a case of rape was reported to have occurred in the Chris Hani Village in Umasizakhe. It is alleged that a 22-year-old mentally challenged female was raped by a family relative. The matter is currently under investigation.
On Thursday, November 16, members of the Graaff-Reinet Crime Prevention Unit arrested a suspect in Church Street for the possession of stolen goods.
The suspect, Hilton Danster could not offer an acceptable explanation for being in possession of a new tyre.
The suspect was brought before the local Magistrates' Court on the same day with the case being postponed for further investigation.
The same fate met Thanduxolo Mazana on Sunday, November 19, when he could not explain the two 5 litre containers of paint found in his possession at Market Square.
Mazana was arrested and appeared in court on Monday, November 20. Two suspects were arrested on November 18 and 19 for being in possession of Dagga and Tik respectively.
