GRAAFF-REINET NEWS & VIDEO - Long hair was a lifestyle for Marlie van der Westhuizen (8), but for a good cause, she paid a visit to a Graaff-Reinet salon and bid her golden locks farewell.
Local hairstylist Victor Verwey, scissors at the ready, took on the task on 9 December. Marlie's hair will be donated to a company in Lynden, Gauteng, to help make a wig for a CANSA patient. Marlie's parents Louw and Ansuné supported their daughter on the day.
Although no one was ever allowed near Marlie's hair with a pair of scissors, she was inspired to cut her hair for a good cause after six learners at Laer Volkskool did the same in November 2017 and March 2018.
"It was the easiest conversation about Marlie's hair and the possibility of cutting off her ponytail we ever had," Louw explained.
Verwey was happy to help, and explained the entire process of cutting, washing, treating and styling Marlie's hair to her.
The youngster didn't seem to regret her decision. "I am happy that I did it," she said with a smile.
