GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — In the week ending 12 June, the members at the various SAPS in the cluster have once again been busy, and several arrests were made in the Graaff-Reinet cluster of Aberdeen, Graaff-Reinet, Jansenville and Willowmore.
In the most serious crimes, one man was arrested for attempted murder, four for attempted rape, and eight for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).
For property-related crimes, there was one arrest for robbery (common), one for theft out of motor vehicle, three for theft, and two for housebreaking and theft.
Two suspects were also arrested for malicious damage to property. Two suspects were arrested for drunken driving, and two for domestic violence. Possession of stolen goods was the cause for one arrest and possession of dagga for five.
A total of 29 traffic fines were issued during this period.
Once again there were many arrests for being drunk and disorderly (23), with 14 for loitering.
An assortment of goods was confiscated, or handed in as suspected stolen property. These include a quantity of dagga, a white Isuzu bakkie, toiletries, a DVD player, a loud speaker, one amplifier, a torch, a wall plug, cell phone chargers, a hair dryer, extension cords, shavers, a coffee maker, and knives.
Anyone who has had property stolen is asked to visit the police station in Middle Street to check for their belongings. Proof of ownership will be required.
Many convictions have also been secured in this period. One for assault GBH (where the suspect was also deemed unfit to possess a firearm), two for possession of dagga and one for Mandrax (with suspended sentences in all cases).
Two suspects were convicted of possession of stolen goods, who received also received suspended sentences. A case of shoplifting resulted in a fine of R1 500 or three months imprisonment, suspended for five years.
Two separate cases of domestic violence also resulted in suspended sentences, with both suspects declared unfit to possess a firearm. A sentence of theft led to a fine of R3 000 or three months imprisonment, suspended for five years. One conviction for housebreaking and theft led to a suspended sentence, with the suspect unfit to possess a firearm. Two men convicted in another housebreaking case were given custodial sentences of three years, with one year suspended for five years. Both were also unfit to own a firearm.
A business housebreaking led to a suspended sentence of 18 months. There was one conviction for housebreaking with intent to steal, for which a sentence of six months imprisonment was given. For drunken driving, the suspect was given a fine of R6 000 or 12 months imprisonment, suspended for three years.
