GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - A 53-year-old Graaff-Reinet man was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for the rape of a seven-year-old girl.
According to Capt Bradley Rawlinson, spokesperson of the Graaff-Reinet SAPS, Pieter Jaftha was sentenced for the crime in the Grahamstown High Court on 21 August.
Jaftha was accused of taking the girl from her home in Santaville on 9 September last year, and took her to a graveyard in town, where he raped her and later released her to go home.
A case of rape was registered at Graaff- Reinet Police Station and the case was handed over to Graaff Reinet Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS). An arrest was made on 16 September 2019.
“Sergeant Z.M November’s hard work and dedication throughout the trial hasn’t gone unnoticed,” said Capt Theo van Zyl, Commander of the Graaff-Reinet FCS unit. “He made sure that the suspect remained in custody throughout the trial until the sentencing.”
