ABERDEEN NEWS - The first week at Luxolo Intermediate School got off to a smooth start, with enrolment numbers having stabilised after the sharp increase over the past few years.
The establishment of a new HOD post, which was filled internally, has created a vacancy at the school for a post level one teacher, and interviews will be held for this position next week. Principal Jan Mathiale hopes that the new appointee will start by the middle of February, which will enable the large grade 2 class of 57 learners to be split into two separate classes.
Currently there is only one class per year, except for grade 1, where the 53 children are divided between two teachers.
One big change this year is the final phasing out of the second uniform option.
The formal main school uniform is a distinctive black and gold, which the learners wear with pride.
One disadvantage in the Karoo unfortunately of the smart black trousers is that they do show the dust, so it was decided many years ago that the learners would have an additional uniform with the standard grey trousers and white shirts, which would be worn two days a week.
However, the expense of having two sets of uniform has now been the main reason for the school to phase out the grey and white uniform gradually over the last two years, keeping the black and gold.
By June this year, all learners will be expected to wear the formal uniform at all times.
The sea of black and gold is certainly distinctive, and makes the learners stand out at interschool events.
A sea of black and gold.
