KAROO NEWS - A group of community stakeholders have started a petition against the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality’s (DBNLM) tariff and municipal salary increases for the 2020/2021 financial year.
The petition appeals to CoGTA Minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Eastern Cape CoGTA MEC Mr XE Nqata and BNLM Mayor Deon de Vos to reconsider all 2020/2021 municipal increases.
They are pushing for a 4% tariff increase and a 0% increase for municipal salaries.
“[The municipality’s] increase is regarded as insensitive and mindless in a time when residents are suffering the economic effects of the Covid 19 lockdown,” the group said. They consist of the Graaff-Reinet Action Committee, Umasizakhe Water Crises Committee and the Graaff-Reinet Residents’ & Ratepayers’ Association (GRRPA), and state that they are non-political.
The municipality did not respond to a request for comment.
To avoid passing forms around amid Covid-19, organisations and individuals are asked to fill in the petition, scan it and email to info@grt-ratepayers.co.za. Contact Liz Buisman, secretary of GRRPA, for forms or assistance: info@grt-ratepayers.co.za or 0603184492.
