GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The police are issuing fines and arresting offenders not adhering to the Criminal Procedure Act during the 21-day lockdown. However, the Graaff-Reinet police declined to reveal statistics on the number of arrests made and fines issued to date.
Police spokesperson Captain Bradley Rawlinson said the national police will reveal the statistics.
Chief Magistrate for the Graaff-Reinet district, Louisa Sha-eeda Du Plessis-Wajid, signed the determination of admission of guilt document that sets out the fines and regulations on Monday 30 March.
Fines begin at R2 000 for admission of guilt and go up to R10 000. Second offenders are arrested and brought before the court, with a possibility of six months' imprisonment.
The Advertiser was shown a fine of R2 000, issued to a man who was walking in Kroonvale, allegedly not for the purpose of accessing an essential service.
