GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - A resident of Vrygronde informal settlement in Graaff-Reinet, Roshida Elias, has been appointed as one of 16 South African community researchers who will provide research support to the groundWork, Friends of the Earth South Africa and Earthlife Africa Research Project - a community-based monitoring and evaluation project of the Just Transition.
Just Transition is motivated by the need to respond to the climate crisis by replacing dirty coal and fuel-based energy with green energy.
The Just Transition is also involved with sustainable developmental goals (SDGs) - particularly those related to the eradication of poverty and hunger, responsible production and consumption, good health and well-being, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, quality education, decent work and economic growth, gender equality and reduced inequalities.
Elias will work with the project research team under the leadership of Dr Victor Munnik.
She will be assisted by the coordinator of the Support Centre for Land Change (SCLC) Environmental Justice Programme and the fieldworker responsible for the implementation of SCLC’s other programmes in Vrygronde
The research project is supported by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), a non-profit German foundation funded by the German government.
