GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Graaff-Reinet Blind Care Society is slowly but surely getting its house in order, says Pastor Thando Ngqele, CEO and the driving force behind this non-profit, community-based service organisation.
He says they are currently in talks with the owner of a dwelling in North Street and if all goes well they could sign a lease agreement early in the new year.
If they can secure the building, which they want to convert into their head office, the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development will most likely become a major sponsor. It is a prerequisite of the department that any welfare organisation applying for financial assistance must have a place (with a physical address) where they operate from.
District Director of the Department, Malusi Kashe, was meant to do a site inspection on Tuesday. Pastor Ngqele says it's been a dream for them to find a suitable training venue. The Blind Care Society has nearly 90 members.
"We can see light at the end of a dark tunnel. If we can sign a lease agreement with the owner the chances are good that the Department of Social Development will come to our aid. Without their financial support, we'll be stranded."
"Our members are very excited about the prospect of getting our own place but should this not materialise they will be devastated," he said. "Me too."
Pastor Ngqele says training and skills development will be top of the list once they move into their new head office. "Braille and mobility training are vital but we would like to improve the skills and abilities of the blind so that they can lead a dignified and productive life. For instance teach them some gardening skills and how to make blankets and liquid soap they can sell, amongst other things. A music school and a mini bakery are also on the cards."
He says the SA Library for the Blind in Durban has agreed to loan books to the society so that members will be able to read in braille. They also want to dedicate two rooms in the house for males and females who are from far for sleepovers once they are in training.
Transport is a huge problem and they will also appreciate any old furniture like chairs, tables, cookery and eat ware, mattresses, blankets and pillows. Volunteers who are willing to assist can phone Pastor Thando on 061 884 2043.
