KAROO NEWS - Refuse removal in Graaff-Reinet ground to a halt last week, with frustrated residents and councillors unable to ascertain the reason for the lack of service.
On Tuesday many took to social media to vent their frustrations, angry that no explanation had been given. Several residents complained that bags that had been left out had been ripped open by either dogs or people, leaving trails of litter. Adendorp residents said that their refuse had not been collected for two weeks.
Other towns
Steytlerville refuse was removed on schedule earlier in the week, and the Steytlerville truck was then used to clear the Jansenville refuse on Wednesday. The same refuse truck was supposed to go to Klipplaat on Thursday, but according to Steytlerville councillor Danie Bezuidenhout, this did not happen, as a message was received that the staff there was not going to work because they apparently do not have protective clothing.
Both Willowmore and Aberdeen should have had the town’s refuse collected on Tuesday, but this was not done. Refuse was also not removed in the Aberdeen suburb of Lotusville on Wednesday.
On Thursday evening, a message was posted on the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality Facebook page, stating that “due to operational challenges, refuse collection was interrupted in certain areas within Graaff-Reinet and Aberdeen.” No mention was made of the lack of service in Willowmore or Klipplaat.
According to the message, on Friday refuse would be collected in the Graaff-Reinet horseshoe area, Wolwas and Adendorp, businesses in Graff-Reinet and Aberdeen, 7de Laan, Queen Street, Khayelitsha, Royal Block, New Location, Zamaville and Santaville.
The normal refuse removal schedule is expected to resume today (29 June).
