GRAAFF-REINET NEWS AND VIDEO - The Karoo is synonymous with open spaces and scenic views.
This is not the case at the Graaff-Reinet landfill site, where litter can be seen on the road leading to the dumpsite for as far as the eye can see.
The state of the site, which is en route to Aberdeen, has been the cause for many complaints in the town over the years, and residents have expressed their concern for the environment.

According to Liz Buisman of the Graaff-Reinet Residents' & Ratepayers' Association, photos and letters regarding the site were sent to the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality (DBNLM) on 17 July, as well as to the Department of Environmental Affairs. No response was given. The DBNLM pulled up their socks last year July, with the help of various community stakeholders, and cleaned the area. Drone footage showed a clean site, but five months later reports were once again received of dumping occurring on the road towards the site.
Photos shared by the municipality on 6 March this year showed further attempts to clean the area, but its current state remains filthy. Litter mostly consists of plastic bags which, with the help of the recent strong winds, have found their way to adjoining farms.
Prior to going to print, DBNLM Acting Spokesperson, Edwardine Abader, stated that cleaning of the site commenced on 5 August. "We will also send a team within the next few days to clean along the road," Abader said.
