ABERDEEN NEWS — As well as several minor cases, two cases of housebreaking and theft, one of culpable homicide, and an inquest docket were opened in Aberdeen over the last two weeks.
The first housebreaking case, in Grey Street, is thought to have happened sometime during the day on Monday, June 26. The owner had been away for the weekend, and on his arrival home on Sunday evening did not notice anything amiss. Later, on Monday, he found the back room near the garage was open - the security gate had been ripped off and the door forced open.
The second case occurred in the early hours of last Thursday morning. A spaza shop in South Location, Thembalesizwe, was broken into, and groceries and airtime were taken to the value of approximately R10 000.
The shop owner received some information about the theft which he passed on to the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Naude Frazenburg. This was duly followed up, as a result, two suspects were arrested. The men, aged 18 and 25, both have previous convictions for property-related crimes. Some of the items were recovered, including airtime and a partially used tin of coffee.
A case of culpable homicide was opened following a serious accident on the R61 between Aberdeen and Beaufort West last Tuesday, June 27. About 60 km from Aberdeen the Toyota Avanza, which was travelling to Cape Town from the former Transkei, crossed the road and went through the fence after the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle when a tyre burst.
When the police arrived on the scene, the six young children who had been in the vehicle were lying on the road covered in blankets, all seriously injured. They were transported to the hospital by ambulance, but sadly one 3-year-old boy died shortly after arrival at Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth.
An inquest docket was opened after a man in his mid-forties was burnt to death in a fire in his house in De Jager Street, Lotusville.
Police were called to the house last Tuesday afternoon when neighbours spotted smoke coming from the bedroom. It is thought that the man was smoking in bed and fell asleep, dropping the lit cigarette onto the carpet which then caught fire.
