GRAAFF-REINET NUUS - After going missing nine months ago, John Doch (74) from Graaff-Reinet, was reunited with his family in the office of the Graaff-Reinet Visible Policing Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Moira Abrahams, on Thursday 11 March.
Doch disappeared from the Nelson Mandela Stadium isolation facility in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) in June last year where he was in quarantine after contracting Covid-19. Doch, who suffers from dementia, and two of his grandchildren, who also tested positive for the virus at the time, was taken to the facility by ambulance on 4 June.
The next day, he allegedly walked out of the stadium and disappeared.
It now transpires that he was found wandering aimlessly by strangers who took him to a homeless shelter at Daku Hall in New Brighton.
The shelter was set up for the homeless during the initial Covid-19 lockdown. Doch is in good physical condition and was identified on Monday 8 March through a missing persons notice that was circulated.
