GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Do not give your OTP or password over the phone. Your bank will never ask you for your password or an OTP.
The Graaff-Reinet Police warns the community against criminal trends like this.
Lt Col Moira Abrahams said that a caller will identify himself as an employee from a relevant bank or any financial institution.
“The suspect states that a transaction took place on the victim's account. The suspect already has all the personal particulars and profile of the victim, including details of the bank accounts, linked accounts beneficiaries etc” said Abrahams.
The suspect then enquires about a suspicious transaction involving a large amount of money that appears on the victim's account.
"When the victim does not want to continue with the transaction, the caller informs the victim that he will reverse the charge if the victim can go onto the banking app. Once the victim logs into the app, the suspect tells the victim to supply the one-time password (OTP) that was sent to reverse the transaction. Once the OTP is given to the suspect, he drains your account or takes a substantial amount of money from your account.”
- Cut the call immediately and contact your bank or phone their toll-free number.
- Do not give your One Time Password (OTP) over the phone to anyone.
