GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - After the recent spate of theft out of motor vehicles, Lieutenant Colonel Moira Abrahams, Visible Commander of Graaff-Reinet Police, urges motorists not to leave items of value unattended in vehicles.
"Either take the valuables with you, leave them at home, placed out of sight, or lock them in the vehicle boot," Abrahams says.
According to the police they have seen an increase in the number of thefts out of motor vehicles. This happens especially in public areas when vehicles are parked unattended on the streets, in dark areas, during the day or at night. They urge motorists to park their vehicles in well-lit areas.
"Many of the targeted motor vehicles do not have any form of alarm system. Always lock vehicle doors and keep the windows closed. Do not leave the vehicle unlocked, even if you think you will only be away for a minute. Avoid stopping at remote places."
Abrahams says the areas of concern include the parking in Church, Caledon, North and Somerset streets.
Since 1 November, residences and two businesses in Wolwas, Woeke and Cradock streets, as well as College and Jansenville roads, have been broken into.
“It is up to us to secure our properties, vehicles and other items of value. The break-ins into cars, residences or businesses happen very quickly, so residents should not think that the time they will be away from their vehicles is too short for anything to happen to them,” said Abrahams.
