The Oppie Bol Foundation, based in Pretoria, is a non-profit organisation which aims to empower disabled, differently abled or vulnerable individuals through involvement in sport. Those interested are given the opportunity to learn to play a sport to be able to interact socially and even at a competitive level with others.
“The Foundation advocates the inclusion of the disabled into mainstream activities to help restore their dignity and create a sense that they can do something for themselves,” explained local organiser Hendrik Davids.
Hendriks became involved with the Foundation through his wife, who is a disabled golfer who plays the sport with one hand. She has already competed at local, provincial, national and international level, and also plays with able-bodied golfers. Income from the tournament will go towards starting a Foundation in Graaff-Reinet.
