GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Victor Gumesa (35), who is facing a charge of murder and attempted murder, appeared in the Graaff-Reinet Magistrate's Court on Tuesday this week following a shooting in Asherville in which a 43-year-old male died and a 16-year-old girl was wounded.
The shooting happened at a house in the area at 16:15 on Sunday 15 January.
The police spokesperson, sergeant Majola Nkohli, says local police were summoned and on arrival discovered the lifeless body of Eric Damons and the seriously injured teenager.
The deceased was shot in the upper body.
"A preliminary investigation led to the arrest of a 35-year-old man and the recovery of a pistol and ammunition that was allegedly used in the murder. The suspect is due to appear in court soon."
Nkohli says it is believed that the same bullet that killed the man, struck the 16-year-old after travelling through the body of the deceased.
The emergency services were summoned and declared the man dead. The girl was taken to the Midlands Hospital and when the Advertser paid her a visit on Monday, she was in a stable condition and resting.
Gumesa will be back in court on 2 February to apply for bail.
