GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Lorette Luscombe and Judy Caryer delivered citrus trees to homeowners with gardens from Riemvasmaak across to Mandela Park recently.
One hundred citrus trees, including navel and nova oranges, Eureka lemons and Bearss limes were a donation through Denise Grootboom, chairperson of the Trees for Graaff-Reinet committee, established to facilitate the planting of trees given in memory of the late Karin Marais, who was tragically murdered in her house.
The organising group has now contacted all donors of funds for trees and the required trees will be ordered in the next month. The donors will be advised when they are available for planting.
Many donors from the Horseshoe have expressed the wish that their trees be planted on the sidewalks to replace the dead trees which cannot be done until the local municipality cuts them down.
Melvis Pietersen of the municipality has said that he would welcome any voluntary help with cutting up the felled trees and carting them to disadvantaged communities for firewood.
Many have asked for white stinkwoods, wild olives and weeping boerboon and one or two coral trees have been requested.
Any further requests for trees should be forwarded to Judy Caryer on 071 704 4615 before the order is lodged. The trees are available for R60 per tree.
