Water
Water in the municipal area remains a scarce resource and I urge communities to continue using water sparingly. Continue adhering to water restrictions and do not use water obtained from the municipality’s water supply system for watering of gardens, filling of swimming pools and refrain from use of hosepipes, sprinklers, etc.
The Tronk Drift crossing in Graaff-Reinet has been closed since 22 March 2021. The road is being refurbished and is expected to re-open on 19 April 2021. The closure of the road from corner Oval Drive to Correctional Services causes an influx of traffic on Oval drive towards the Robert Sobukwe Building. Communities must please adhere to road rules and please drive safely, especially at the Oval drive and College road intersection.
Dumping
Illegal dumping sites remains a problem in all areas in the municipality. The Community Services Directorate is working around the clock to ensure refuse is removed on scheduled days. Communities must please remain patient as there may be delays in collection due to unforeseen circumstances. However, communities will be informed should there be any changes in collection days as per schedule.
Aside from being an eyesore, illegal dumping wreaks havoc on the environment. Chemicals from waste can leach into soil and local waterways causing damage to animals and water quality. Please only put refuse out on refuse collection days.
Covid-19
The latest Covid-19 statistics for Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality, as at 8 April indicates no new cases for the area with only one active case.
Vaccination roll-out continues and phase 2 is expected to commence in May. Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize announced that South Africa has signed a deal for the procurement of 20 million doses of Pfizer vaccines in addition to the Johnson & Johnson agreement, which is fully concluded. This will improve expansion of the country’s Covid-19 vaccination programme rapidly.
Health protocols and regulations are still in place and must be adhered to. Residents must continue to act with caution as the virus is still amongst us.
Stay safe.
