GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - A fire destroyed the inside of a home in Bergendal, Graaff-Reinet, yesterday (6 May) evening.
The devastating incident took place on the corner of Liebenberg and Woeke Streets at around 8.30pm.
Isabel Verwey, owner of the house, said she was busy in the kitchen making a sandwich, when she heard a noise that resembled something falling. Verwey went to her room to investigate, and found the room on fire.
Verwey said the fire spread too fast for her to stop it.
The fire brigade and police were on the scene within minutes. Together with the neighbours, they tried their best to extinguish the fire. They stopped the flames from burning down the entire house, but the inside was destroyed.
“I lost all my things with sentimental value, along with the contents of the house. You can rebuild the house and buy other furniture, but you cannot replace the things with sentimental value,” Verwey said.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
