GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Dr Beyers Naudé Municipal Council will see three fewer councillors seated after the 2021 municipal elections.
Politicians and other role players are busy preparing for the sixth municipal election since the end of apartheid in 1994.
Member of National Parliament and DA Constituency Leader for the Dr Beyers Naudé municipal area, Samantha Graham-Maré, confirmed to the Advertiser on Wednesday that the Municipal Demarcation Board informed political parties that two of the 14 municipal wards will fall away.
Graham-Maré explained that with only 12 wards remaining to vote for councillors of choice, there will be one less proportional councillor and two fewer ward councillors.
The Demarcation Board is an independent authority that rules on the delimiting of ward boundaries and the total and the total electoral wards within municipalities.
With the 3 August 2016 municipal election,s 27 councillors, consisting of eight ANC ward councillors and six DA ward councillors, together with 13 proportional councillors (seven ANC, six DA), took their seats in the local government chamber.
In 2021 only 24 seats (12 wards, 12 proportional) will be filled, from where the municipality will be ruled.
It is not yet know when the compulsory public participation process to decide on the ward boundaries will take place.
The date for the 2021 elections must be proclaimed by the President.
This is an ongoing story.
