GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Rose Wright, one of the forces behind last year’s Santa Shoebox drive in Graaff-Reinet, had the honour last week of addressing the quarterly meeting of the Buffelshoek Farmers’ Association about the project, following an invitation from the Association’s secretary Katie Herold.
This national project was run in the Graaff-Reinet area for the first time last year, thanks to the dynamic enthusiasm of Kitty Viljoen and her many helpers, and this year even more children are on the books, eagerly anticipating a treat from Santa.
After a brief explanation of how the project works, and who benefits from it, there was a unanimous decision from those at the meeting that they should support the project, and that one shoebox would be given for every member. There are 16 members in the Association, so this will indeed be a very welcome boost to the Graaff-Reinet coffers.
Despite the major problems faced due to the drought, it is wonderful to see the community spirit of the farmers in this area.
“Farmers are good and generous people. It is important that city and town dwellers recognise the enormous and endless support that they give to the communities- they never want any recognition and tend not to talk about it much as they are simply see it as the “right thing to do” for those in need” added Rose.
Many more volunteers are still needed to ensure that each one of the nominated children can receive a gift. Information on how to become involved can be found on the website www.santashoebox.org.za, or by phoning Kitty Viljoen on 049 891 0576
