ABERDEEN NEWS - Three opportunistic juveniles had it coming on Thursday 13 April when they broke into an Aberdeen resident's house in Darling Street at around 16:00.
Thanks to the swift action of the local police, the resident and an observant boy, the delinquents were at the police station an hour after the theft and all the stolen goods returned to the owner.
"Since I got everything back, I agreed that the case be closed," says Mommy D (not her real name).
Mommy D was outside, watching over children she looks after daily, when she noticed a boy sitting under a tree next to her property's gates. "Looking after children I have to be aware of my surroundings. The boy caught my eye at about 15:50."
At 16:10 Mommy D's gardener alerted her that the bedroom door facing the street (which is at the other side from where she was with the children), was ajar. She immediately thought of the boy who, in the meantime, had left. "I realised somebody had been inside so I checked my belongings. My white tablet and four watches were gone and I called the police."
Outside she saw another young boy playing in the street. "He told me he saw the other boys going into my house and described each of them and what they wore to a tee. He was such a star.
"I then announced on social media that our house was broken into. I appealed to everybody to alert me if someone tried to sell my tablet and watches."
WO Ambraal, Sgt Green and Cst Olifant arrived within minutes after they received the call. The requisite protocol was followed and they left. "That was before 16:25, since between 16:25 and 16:35 I got wind that somebody found the boys with the tablet. I got the address and my husband drove me there."
Mommy D says she called SAPS again, requesting them to escort her to the address or to meet her there. Upon arrival she recognised the boys from the description given to her. "I knew they had to have my things."
Asked how she got them to confess, Mommy D chuckles. "Let me just say I 'convinced' them to hand back my belongings."
Mommy D is grateful to Aberdeen SAPS and stresses that residents should be alert at all times.
