KAROO NEWS - Eastern Cape Transport MEC Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe has called on road users not to “go wild” as bars and taverns prepare to re-open under lockdown level 2.
In a statement by the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, Tikana-Gxothiwe warns that the Eastern Cape saw an unprecedented high number of alcohol-related car crashes on the first day of the previous time that the alcohol ban was lifted, under level 3 in June.
“Ten fatalities were recorded on the first day, with many people sustaining life altering injuries,” the statement read. “Within nine days of level 3, the province registered 60 drunken driving cases, of which 31 resulted in accidents.”
According to Tikana-Gxothiwe, officers will be on high alert and people are urged not to place themselves and others at risk. “Those who break the law will be dealt with,” Tikana-Gxothiwe warned.
