GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — On Monday, September 25, the DA's Ward 14 councillor Joy Williams hosted a fun day in honour of National Heritage Day in Bree Street, Santaville.
Williams as well as fellow councillors, Councillor Swarts and Councillor Carolus and members of the community, all joined in to bring the residents of Santaville together in an effort to celebrate and educate the youth about their heritage.
Ladies from the DA and the community were hard at work throughout the morning preparing a traditional meal of Puthu Pap and Mince Stew on an open fire in traditional three-legged black pots for the locals of Santaville.
All ingredients for the hearty traditional meal were kindly donated by an anonymous farmer for which Williams and her team are exceptionally grateful.
Children and adults alike joined in on the fun - many were dressed in traditional outfits and spent the day dancing and singing. All in attendance were also entertained by local Rastafarians who performed dance items and cultural presentations.
Williams said it is important to make days like Heritage Day especially special for the impoverished communities "so that we encourage a spirit of pride and unity in an atmosphere that is more often filled with stress and worries".
