GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - According to the Graaff-Reinet SAPS, the sale of liquor did not increase crimes in Graaff-Reinet.
This despite information from a trusted source within Midland Hospital, who said multiple patients with alcohol-related injuries, such as stabbings, were admitted to hospital last week.
Police Spokesperson, Captain Bradley Rawlinson, said police are on high alert to combat crimes related to abuse of alcohol. He said statistics show that between 1 and 6 June, crime and arrests indicated no significant increase due to alcohol abuse.
The only domestic violence case reported to Graaff-Reinet SAPS took place on 1 June at 21:30. It is alleged that a grandchild assaulted his grandfather in Hillside, Umasizakhe. Three cases of assault with the intention of serious injury were also reported. These three assault incidents took place on Vink Street, Santaville (on 2 June), School Street, Santaville (on 5 June), and Affodil Street, Asherville (on 6 June). In two of the cases, the victims were stabbed. In the Vink Street case, the victim was brutally attacked by a gang of people.
Three theft out of a motor vehicle cases, on 1, 3 and 5 June respectively, were reported. In these cases, a laptop, 14kg of chicken and car keys were stolen.
On 3 June, a shoplifting case was reported on Caledon Street.
Between 4 and 6 June, two wooden poles and a piece of netting was stolen. On 5 June, an outside light of a house on Sobukwe Street, Umasizakhe, disappeared.
