GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Graaff-Reinet policing precinct is experiencing a definite increase in violent crimes during the reporting period of December 11 to 18.
Contact crimes are expected to escalate in view of the festivities and the misuse of alcohol at this time of the year explains police spokesperson, W/O Gerrie van Rooyen.
Frieda Booysen was arrested on a charge of serious assault on Sunday, December 10, after she stabbed a friend with a bottleneck during a quarrel in 'Blom se Kamp'.
On Wednesday, December 13, Sebastiaan Vrolick was arrested on a charge of aggravated robbery after a 28-year-old victim was stabbed several times and robbed of his cell phone and cash in Santaville.
On the evening of December 17, a 26-year-old man was walking in Orange Street, Kroonvale, when he was approached by three men.
He was threatened with a knife and robbed of his personal belongings.
The suspects are known and arrests are expected to follow soon.
The same fate met a 35-year-old man when he was robbed of his cell phone at knifepoint in Napier Street on Saturday evening, December 16. No arrest has been made.
During the early hours of Saturday, December 16, police members on patrol found the badly injured 20-year-old Johnson Pipes lying in Boog Street, Santville.
Pipes had a stab wound in the back and was taken to the Midlands Hospital where he succumbed of his injuries soon afterwards.
A case of murder has been opened for investigation and the police are calling upon any witnesses to come forward and assist with the investigation.
In a domestic-related incident on Saturday, December 16, in Hartzenberg Street, Nieu-Bethesda, Jan Albertus Oudshoorn was arrested on a charge of murder after his 59-year- old spouse died of injuries she sustained during an assault.
It is alleged that Oudshoorn assaulted his wife, Sehraldine, with a stick. A number of assault cases were reported to have been committed in Umasizakhe during the past week.
A clothing outlet was burglared in Caledon Street during the night of December 16.
Simpiwe Jobe and Madodana Hermaans were arrested for the possession of drugs on Friday and Saturday, December 15 and 16, respectively.
All the mentioned arrestees appeared in court and had their cases postponed pending further investigation.
