GRAAFF-REINET NEWS AND VIDEO - Nelson Mandela's legacy taught South Africans to live in a clean environment, but when the municipality fails to adhere to this wish, even children take to the streets to ensure a better life in a green environment.
On 18 July (Mandela Day), around 15 children and some adults, under the supervision of Lynne Moseley, cleaned Nuwe Street, Graaff-Reint and sang a song in honour of Madiba afterwards.
Moseley said the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality sets a poor example to youngsters.
"How must we teach children to be proud of their environment if it looks like this?" she asked.
She added that the state of the street was unacceptable, given the recent salary and tariff increases by the municipality.
The clean-up on Nuwe Street, in honour of Mandela Day, has been an annual tradition for the last seven years.
According to Moseley, the team managed to collect more than 20 bags of rubbish. However, she is worried that the municipality won't collect it, as a nearby municipal skip hasn't been emptied for months.

The Advertiser asked the municipality for comment on the state of the street, but they did not comment in time for print.
