GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - A well-known church leader, sportsman, politician and a loved father of 10 children, Sam Williams celebrated his 100th birthday on Sunday 25 December.
Sam Williams was born on 25 December 1922 in Graaff-Reinet. As he grew of age he became an elder and followed Christianity at Luzipho Congrational church in Umasizakhe. He is married to Minah Katie Williams on the 8 June 1957.
Williams was actively involved in football and joined Shamrocks Football Club in the 1951, later established the Flying Stars Football Club. The team consisted of players such as Manieguy Davids, Basie Lêntê Vrolik, Foedei and John Nappies.
The most memorable was when he captained his team to victory (9-3) against Young Rangers, Vereniging, Gauteng.
On completing a successful football career he became president of the Graaff-Reinet Footballs Referees Association, before retirement In 1957 and becoming an Evangelist minister at Luzipho Congrational church in Umasizakhe.
