GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Graaff-Reinet SAPS are investigating a case of theft, after three suspects in balaclavas broke into the Giant Flag project and stole items worth over R3 000.
According to a statement by the Giant Flag project, the suspects broke into the Mother Flag section on Monday evening, attacked and tied-up the guard on duty, and stole lights and netting meant for the black part of the flag.
Capt Bradley Rawlinson, spokesperson of the Graaff-Reinet SAPS, confirmed the incident, which took place on Asher Street, near the cemetery.
"This is a signal of the abject poverty of the rural poor," read the project's statement. "The entire purpose of the Giant Flag's existence, even at this pilot stage, is toward local economic stability." They called on the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Muncipality and other stakeholders for support regarding job creation, renewable energy and food production.
The Giant Flag project is a 66 hectare South African flag to be planted in a desert area, made up of millions of coloured desert plants and a solar field.
