GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - After a casual request by CSI volunteer Greg Kappers on June 14 on the Graaff-Reinet Swap, Sell and Advertise Facebook group for donations of carpet off-cuts, he was inundated with far more than he expected.
Businesses and private residents of Graaff-Reinet really came up trumps, keeping Kappers and his assistants busy for the whole day on Tuesday, cutting the carpets into small pieces.
The original plea was for bits of old off cut carpeting in reasonable condition to place in their three cat traps, which are set in and around Graaff-Reinet to trap feral cats for sterilisation.
Debbie Muir kicked off the charity drive with Electro Cool’s donation, which was soon followed by a number of off-cuts from Stephan de Klerk at Top Carpets Heroldts.
Lyn Berriman at Leopards Valley Guest Cottages saw the plea on the GRAND Karoo Facebook page thanks to Nicola Beldon's post and donated. Michael Smit of Karoo French Kitchen gave some unwanted carpeting, and Johan Rigardt Nieuwenhuizen donated a massive old carpet which was cut up into many mats.
After cutting, 160 pieces of much needed warm carpets has been made available to dog and cat kennels in Graaff Reinet, Aberdeen, Noupoort and Nieu-Bethesda. Many animals are going to be just that much warmer this winter!
Victoria Nance in Nieu-Bethesda will benefit with about 50 kennels in Nieu-Bethesda able to get carpets, and Courtney Stassen in Noupoort will receive some carpets which she will decide on how and where to use.
The Graaff-Reinet SPCA will get 20 large and 30 small mats to put in their dog and cat kennels, and 20 large pieces will go to Maureen MacAndrew for CARE in Aberdeen. Furthermore, another 30 large pieces have been left with Erma Voigt of CSI to give to those in desperate circumstances in Graaff-Reinet.
“All in all, a fantastic outcome for the disadvantaged pets this winter” said an exhausted yet elated Kappers on Tuesday evening, who is thrilled that he also got the three brand new pieces that he requested for his precious cat traps!

“At a time when the cold is really setting in we hope all the animals that receive carpets will be just a little bit warm this winter” he concluded, thanking all those who so readily donated.
Anyone still wanting to donate can contact Erma at CSI on 072 176 2175. There are so many pets that could still benefit from any old carpets and mats.
