GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - This week, 25 suspects were arrested in Graaff-Reinet for serious crimes, including murder and drug offences, and a further 19 for minor offences.
- One suspect in each case was arrested for murder, attempted murder, and sexual assault. In drug-related cases, there were two suspects in each case arrested for possession of Mandrax, dealing in Mandrax and possession of tik.
- On property-related crimes, there were two arrests each for housebreaking and theft and common robbery, one for stock theft, four for theft and one for malicious damage to property.
- In other miscellaneous cases, there was one arrest for crimen injuria, two for contravention of protection order, and three under warrants of arrest.
The lesser offences for which arrests were made are five for drinking in public, nine for being drunk and disorderly, four for traffic offences and one for trespassing.
- Six convictions, all with suspended sentences, were secured in the Graaff-Reinet court.
- For contravening a protection order, the suspect was given a sentence of six months’ imprisonment, suspended for three years. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
- Theft out of a motor vehicle also resulted in a sentence of six months’ imprisonment, suspended for three years.
- Two suspects were sentenced for separate cases of theft. In the first, the sentence was a fine of R2 000 or four months’ imprisonment, suspended for three years. The second was for five months’ imprisonment, also suspended for the same period.
- In a case of possession of tik, one suspect received a sentence of a fine of R1 000 or one month’s imprisonment, suspended for one year. The second suspect was handed down a more sever sentence of six months’ imprisonment, suspended for three years. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The very mixed assortment of confiscations were recorded in Graaff-Reinet: screwdrivers, knives, padlocks, wooden panels, cell phones, 136 Mandrax tablets, 42 straws of tik, dagga, cash, a firearm, clothing, and copper wires.
