ABERDEEN NEWS — The annual general meeting for the Aberdeen ACVV, as well as for the ACVV Aalwynhof division, was held on September 28 at Aalwynhof Old Age Home.
Aalwynhof is run by the ACVV, with the day-to-day organisation organised by manager Rene Jongkind. The Aalwynhof ACVV falls under the umbrella of the Aberdeen branch of the ACVV. This structure was explained to the visitors present at the meeting.
Chairperson of the Aberdeen branch, Buks van Niekerk, reported on the past year. The aim of the organisation is to bring in funds for Aalwynhof and to give service where needed. She expressed her gratitude to Jongkind and all the staff at Aalwynhof, saying that the organisation was very proud of the level of service offered at the home.
One of the highlights of the year was the visit from a group of charity motorcyclists, who had collected money and goods for the Home, as well as organising a fundraising function in Aberdeen. This was greatly appreciated.
Special meals had been held for residents at the end of last year, with a tea in conjunction with the VLV and a special lunch early in December. A wonderful fundraiser was also held in February in the form of a Valentines Dance, and all who helped with this were thanked.
Last year, the annual Aalwynhof bazaar was held at Aalwynhof again, to make it more accessible to residents of the Home. This was deemed to be a success and was well supported.

Rene Jongkind then gave her management report on matters at Aalwynhof, which was very positive. She gave details on the numbers of staff and residents. As well as the permanent residents, the Home has been able to offer accommodation to some local people in need of temporary care or recuperation for short periods during the year, a facility which has been greatly appreciated by those in need. She also thanked all the volunteers who have given so freely of their time during the past year, whether it be in visiting and entertaining residents, or of a practical nature in maintenance.
Financially, Aalwynhof is once again on a sound footing, with many expenses having been reduced through careful planning and control. Although the bill for wages has inevitably increased due to higher salaries, savings have been made on groceries, medicines and water and electricity, leading the Home to have a healthy surplus for the first time in several years.
At the conclusion of the business part of the meeting, the members and guests enjoyed socialising over tea and snacks.
