GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — A second fatal motor vehicle accident in just a few short weeks near the intersection of Caledon Street and Market Square in Graaff-Reinet claimed two lives on Monday afternoon, August 8.
The accident happened at about 3pm, when a delivery vehicle approaching Graaff-Reinet from Middelburg’s direction crashed into a palm tree on the central island, just past Botha’s Garage.
The two Kwikot employees in the bakkie were returning home to Port Elizabeth after completing work in De Aar.
According to witnesses at the scene of the accident, the bakkie was travelling at a high speed, and it would seem that the driver lost control of the vehicle before crashing into the tree.
Local emergency services arrived at the accident scene shortly thereafter and attempted to rescue the two men trapped inside the wreckage, but sadly they died at the scene of the accident from multiple injuries caused by
the impact.
The men were named as 43-year-old Themba Hejana, who was driving the vehicle, and his passenger 30-year-old Brian Msuthu - both from Port-Elizabeth.
Their families have been informed of the tragedy. This accident comes just three weeks after another accident in Market Square on the afternoon of July 17 claimed the life of 46-year-old Graaff-Reinet resident Johan Jordaan.
A spokesperson for the local traffic department responded that they are investigating the cause of the accident, and will then comment on the matter when all the information is available.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
The vehicle is removed from the accident scene.
