GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — In 2012 one woman’s dream became a larger-than-life project that astounds every day when the ‘Pink Trees for Pauline’ fundraising initiative was founded.
Carol-Ann van Jaarsveld took the legacy of her mother and grandmother, who she both lost to cancer, and turned it into an epic tale of hope, encouragement and belonging. The initiative was born and since then, in October every year, all the trees along the roads in Graaff-Reinet are wrapped in pink material.
This year, Union High School took it one step further. Headgirl, Amy-Lee Kroon, is the brain behind the 'Pink Socks for Cancer' initiative. During the month of October, all Union Schools learners were to wear pink socks on a Friday.
These they could purchase at the school’s clothing shop. Once the project was launched, the school was inundated with calls from other schools and organisations across South Africa – trying to find out where they can also get hold of pink socks!
On Monday, it was a great honour for Union High to be able to hand over a cheque for R9 000, raised through the pink socks campaign, to Pink Trees for Pauline.
However, that was not the only project in which Union High supported the Graaff-Reinet and District Cancer Association this year. Another was the partnership between Union High School Hockey and College Motors/Caltex Fresh Stop, cemented by an initiative where the first hockey team's performance directly benefits the local Cancer Association.
The drive is called "Goals for Cancer" and every goal scored by the 1st XI girls this year resulted in a donation of R100 from Caltex Fresh Stop to the Cancer Association. This partnership managed to raise R6 400 for the Cancer Association this year.
Two great initiatives from Union High School supporting the community, raising cancer awareness and making a difference in peoples’ lives.
