ABERDEEN NEWS — At the end of last year, the organisation Food and Trees for Africa contacted the Revd Canon John Weldon, rector of St James Church in Graaff-Reinet, to ask if he needed trees around the church to enhance the environment.
As St James Church is well endowed with established trees, he explained that he did not need them at the church in Graaff-Reinet, but would arrange for local distribution to those who would benefit.
He contacted Jean Watermeyer in Aberdeen, who he knew to be working with the Aberdeen Hospital staff to establish a garden at the hospital. She was delighted, and then arranged to share further, and passed some on to the municipality, to be planted in the caravan park.
The trees, which came from a nursery in Bloemfontein, were specifically chosen to be indigenous to the Karoo. They were delivered to the rectory a couple of weeks ago, and distributed to Aberdeen, for the hospital and caravan park, as well as St.Peter and St.Paul Church in Thembalesizwe to enhance the bare space that is currently their grounds. Some were also sent to St.Matthew’s Church in Beaufort West to use in front of their new hall facility.
Food and Trees for Africa are responsible for finding recipients for trees, which are sponsored by Konica Minolta South Africa (KMSA). All the beneficiaries of this donation to the Karoo are extremely grateful to the donors KMSA, and to Food and Trees for Africa for considering this area.
