MIDDELBURG NEWS — On Thursday, January 26, the new Khanya Ndimba Computer Centre had their grand opening ceremony at the Middelburg Work 4 a Living Centre.
The centre is situated at Krotoshuis in Smith Street.
Anette Kingwill and Alutta (Choppa) Siko welcomed everyone whereafter Kingwill explained where the centre got its name from: “Khanya means “Bringer of Light” and is named after Khanya Ndimba who was a vibrant and academically talented third-year Rhodes University B Comm student who had a dream of becoming a chartered accountant.
She and her family were planning her 21st birthday celebration for Saturday, June 20, 2015, but instead, on that same day, the family gathered for her funeral to mourn the death of a young life taken.
In the early hours of Saturday, June 14, 2015, Ndimba and two friends were walking to the shop at a petrol station in New Street, Grahamstown, to buy food after having studied all night at the Rhodes University library, when a vehicle struck her at high speed while overtaking another vehicle, and she was tragically killed.”
Ena Richards from Siya Sebenza in Port Elizabeth, was the guest speaker. Siya Sebenza started in 2007 in PE and their aim is to empower people in the sense that they will understand how to help themselves.
The Middelburg Harmony Voice Choir, as well as gumboot dancers, entertained the guests with their talented performances.
Siko, a former Grootfontein Agricultural student, gave feedback on the centre. Siko joined Work4aLiving in February 2016. He believes that this centre will bring light and hope to many young lives and allow them to fulfil their potential and attain goals they did not know they were capable of. Siko, who is like a son to Ed and Anette Kingwill, will be the trainer at the new computer centre.
He thanked Rhodes University, Di Hornby and Heather Dugmore for the computers that will be used for training.
Len Kok, owner of Kratoshuis and Dave Turner from Middelburg Family Church blessed the new centre. The mayor of Middelburg, Ray Shweni, and Frikkie Visser then opened the doors to the new Khanya Ndimba Computer Centre.
