MIDDELBURG NEWS — The SRC and House Committee of Grootfontein College of Agriculture, under the supervision of Niel Schoeman, enjoyed three days of Induction and Teambuilding at Karoo River Rafting, 66.3km outside of Middelburg, close to Schoombee.
The whole event was facilitated by Quintus Smit from Pointman Leadership Institute (Pretoria), a professional in the field of life coaching and leadership ethics.
James Jordaan is ’n kranige kanovaarder en bedryf saam met sy vrou, Delina, Karoo River Rafting op die Brakrivier tussen Middelburg en Cradock. In Desember was hullereeds 10 jaar in dié bedryf!
This is where Grootfontein SRC and HC spent their 3-day induction course from January 16 to 18. The students took part in several activity events like river-rafting, obstacle course and abseiling under the supervision of Dwain and Hannes from Adrenaline Junkies.
After the students settled in on Monday morning, they went for a quick swim in the river after completion of their first leadership training session. The night they spent around the fire near the river, exchanging some more ideas on how they were going to deal with all the new challenges for this new academic year at Grootfontein.
Sowat 100 m rivier-op vanwaar die studente gebly het, digby James en Delina se huis, stort die Groot Brakrivier met ’n groot geruis oor ’n keerwal.
This is also where they took part in the abseiling on Tuesday.
Van daar af baan die rivier sy weg tussen die dig-begroeide oewers in die rigting van die Grasrugdam. Karoo River Rafting is die beginpunt en het hulle Dinsdag 16 km rivier-af geroei.
All the students were safely equipped with special life-jackets and helmets and used Karoo River Rafting’s exclusive Crocs. All the security measures were explained to them as well before they went onto the river.
The most important measure is, if you fall off the croc, you should turn yourself into the cocktail-position! Actually, it means you should turn on your back and float down-stream with your feet in the direction of the stream.
Quintis Smit taught the students several life lessons during the three days. The most important are that in life you can’t do everything alone, you always need somebody somewhere (especially during the obstacle course!!).
In life, you will also experience lots of obstacles on your way, so make lots of friends at Grooties, because somewhere in life you will definitely need a friend again. On Tuesday the new Principal at Grootfontein, Themba Cabane, paid them a surprise visit. Cabane was totally surprised about all the exciting events at Karoo River Rafting and decided to join the new first years this coming weekend for abseiling!
