GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Graaff-Reinetters from all walks of life took part in the ‘5000 Steps for Cancer’ initiative held by the Pink Trees for Pauline Graaff-Reinet fundraising initiative.
The walk, held on Saturday morning, October 22, provided a platform for participants to honour loved ones lost to the disease, to celebrate those who survived and to support those who continue to fight against it.
Between 250 and 350 men, women, children, and even dogs gathered at the Stockenstroom Street entrance to the Botanics Sports Grounds from where the walk was started at 9am.
From here they walked down the length of Stockenstroom Street and then up Donkin Street, into Park Street ending at the Botanics hall.
Here the participants then socialized and meandered through the various stalls which filled the hall.
"This is an amazing day," said André van Rensburg, event organizer and chairperson of the Pink Trees for Pauline Graaff-Reinet committee. "Every cent raised by this project goes towards strengthening the funds of the Graaff-Reinet and District Cancer Association. The money is then used by the Association to provide care and assistance to local cancer sufferers.”
“We are so thankful towards the Graaff-Reinet community for their tremendous support of this project,” said Van Rensburg. “Graaff-Reinetters have a generosity of spirit that I am yet to feel anywhere,” he added.
According to Van Rensburg, 600 ribbons were sold in all through this initiative which has generated some much-needed funds for the Association.
