GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — The year 2017 is well underway and the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality is proud to announce that with limited resources, the Protection Services Department: Traffic Control managed to keep the roads in our towns safe during the recent holiday season.
More than 30 people were fined for speed violations and 15 were fined for driving without a licence. Nine vehicles were stopped for passenger overload while six people were fined for cellphone violations.
Ten people were arrested for driving under the influence, possessing no permits, as well as warrants. Almost 270 vehicles were stopped during December 2016.
The heaviest traffic was observed during the weekends of December 10 and 11, 2016, December 16 and 18, 2016 and December 23 to 26, 2016.
In respect of fire services, the only reported incidents are as follows:
• Monday, December 12 to 16, 2016: mountain fires within Baviaanskloof;• Wednesday, December 14, 2016: veld fire at Rubidge Kloof in Nieu Bethesda due to lightning;
• Saturday, December 17, 2016: articulated truck brakes caught fire due to avoiding an accident 13km from Graaff-Reinet towards Middelburg on the N9;
• Early hours of Sunday, December 18, 2016: assist with traffic control during head-on collision of two Iveco Buses approximately 22km from Graaff-Reinet towards Middelburg and road closure for 3 hours;
• Friday, December 23, 2016: house fire at 7 Lang Street - fire extinguished before arrival of fire engine;
• Early hours of Saturday, December 24, 2016: workshop of Mesh & Steel factory in Oval Drive on fire; and
• Sunday, January 1, 2017: house fire at 63 Bree Street due to an electrical fault.
