GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Residents of Graaff-Reinet and surrounding areas came together as a community at the end of last week in an effort to provide emergency relief to the victims of the Knysna fires.
While the city of Knysna remains very much in turmoil as a result of the numerous properties destroyed by the fire leaving many locals destitute, Graaff-Reinet has rallied in support of the victims.
On Thursday, June 8, a social media post went viral requesting any individuals wanting to donate to the victims to drop off any donations at Mica Graaff-Reinet by 10am the next day, June 9.
The response was overwhelming and a Montego Pet Nutrition truck delivered all donated goods successfully to Knysna.
Local, Wendy Brussow also took to Facebook to reach out to individuals looking to donate. Brussow, joined by a group of counsellors, travelled to Knysna to assist those affected by the devastating fires on Sunday, June 11.
Brussow described the situation in Knysna as of Tuesday, June 13, to be still very smoky and surreal.
She went on to describe vast areas of sparseness covered in black ash and wisps of smoke.
The people, as she described, are all reacting differently.
Some still are reeling from emotion after losing their homes while others have already begun to put back the pieces of what is left.
She is extremely grateful to the people of Graaff-Reinet for their generosity and describes it as a blessing to have been able to help those in need thanks to so many acts of kindness from the people of Graaff-Reinet.
