GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — The tragic death of a 7-year-old girl this past week has highlighted the problem of pedestrian safety on the busy national roads, particularly over the holiday season.
The accident happened on Saturday, January 7, on the R75 between Adendorp and Wolwas.
According to witnesses, a group of five children were walking along the main road together from the Adendorp direction towards Graff-Reinet.
The children ran across the road near the Wolwas turn-off, and a car, driven by a 63-year-old man from Adendorp, was unable to avoid hitting the little girl. The shocked driver immediately stopped, and an ambulance was called, but tragically Petronella Slinger, who lived in Narsing Street, died at the scene of the accident.
The police are investigating the accident, and a case of culpable homicide has been opened against the driver.
