MIDDELBURG NEWS — The Middelburg Garden and Home Club visited Fairfield, home of David and Karen McEwan last week.
Karen, a qualified chef, wanted to feed her family healthy, safe and freshly grown organic veggies. The only option for her was to start her own veggie garden and what a magnificent one it has grown into.
Karen makes use of permaculture principles which include the overall organic growing of veggies. She uses only organic and Heirloom seeds. Never genetically modified ones.
She practices the “no-till” system and also companion planting. As is obvious from the lush growth, Karen practices continuous planting to ensure bumper crops.
Strategic food forest combination planting is something Karen is just starting and will introduce only those plants and trees that our Middelburg climate allows. In principle, trees and plants are replaced by fruit and nuts trees, shrubs, herbs and vegetables which, unlike a real forest, provide yields that are directly useful to humans.
Her whole vegetable garden is watered by means of drip irrigation.
Karen also treated Club members to tea/coffee and an array of wonderful eats.
The Club extends their thanks to Karen for sharing her beautiful garden and information with them.
