GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — The Lions International organisation celebrates its centenary this year, and as part of the celebrations to mark this milestone, Graaff-Reinet Lions Club held a “Buddies that Care” event.
Handicapped learners from Khanyisa were twinned with learners from Kroonvale Primary, and the children had great fun participating in various sports together. Botanics very kindly made their field and facilities available, for which the organisers are very grateful.
Lion Lena Hoffman put the morning’s activities together and had the generous help of two of her colleagues from Kroonvale Primary, Godwin Bosch and Peter Free. Sakkie van Zyl was also thanked for the “sakke.” The children took part in sack races, apple and spoon races, tyre races, three-legged races, and finished off with a tug-of-war. One delighted but exhausted participant exclaimed at the end of the morning that she was “lekker moeg”! The children’s happy spirit of co-operation was a delight.
The organisers would also like to thank the sponsors for their generosity - Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Saverite and Wolff and Johnstone generously donated food and drinks and Lisa’s Boutique donated prizes. Alan Hoffman kindly brought his speakers and microphones and supplied upbeat music, which added to the enjoyment of the occasion.
After such a successful day, the Lions have made the decision to make the sports an annual event.
Although the Graaff-Reinet Lions Club is small, it strives to make Lions’ aim, to make a difference to lives, come true.
