ABERDEEN NEWS — An event to commemorate Youth Day was held in Thembalesizwe last Friday, arranged by the Department of Social Development.
Social worker Lelethu Mbongi, who was the event coordinator, spoke first about the purpose of the day –to build a healthy, drug-free society. Other speakers included Maureen Jacobs from the Masakhane Clinic, who spoke about the problems associated with teenage pregnancy, and councillors Thembisa Nonnies and Eldrige Ruiters.
The main speaker was police captain Advocate Qashani, who went into some detail on the themes of drugs and alcohol abuse. He appealed for people to give information to the police regarding those selling drugs and running illegal shebeens, to help reduce crime. He explained how drug addiction influences the way people think and affects not just the user, but also their family, the neighbours and the entire community. Those attending learnt that the assets and finances of drug runners and dealers can be forfeited and that this type of business does not pay in the long run. “Substance abuse is an accelerator of criminal activities including burglary, murder, rape, possession of stolen goods, and abduction” warned Capt Qashani. He also spoke about domestic violence, in particular, most cases of which are fuelled by drug or alcohol abuse. Parents were urged to act as positive role models for their children.
Capt Qashani also commented on the lack of involvement of the youth in social-related meetings and churches, saying regretfully that youngsters prefer to gather in taverns and drink. He requested that the community joins hands to reduce property related crimes, contact crimes and domestic violence, and thanked the organisers for giving him the opportunity to share his advice.
Entertainment was provided by learners from Luxolo Intermediate School who performed a drama, a community choir, and the well-trained youngsters of Mloza Voices junior choir. Various sporting activities also took place, and refreshments were provided courtesy of some donations from the community.
